I'm Krystle Jalalian-Chursky (most people call me Dr. JC), a professor of Curriculum and Instruction/Special Education and the Director of Undergraduate Teacher Education at Seattle Pacific University (SPU), where I’ve been teaching and mentoring future educators since 2016.
My work is rooted in supporting neurodivergent learners, including students who are gifted, autistic, have ADHD, and learning disabilities, or are twice exceptional. Before joining SPU, I worked as a clinician and behavioral therapist at the University of Washington’s Experimental Education Unit (EEU) at the Haring Center and Seattle Children’s Research Institute, where I helped design and implement intervention programs for young children, particularly those with autism.
At SPU, I teach across special education, elementary, and early childhood programs, and I’m deeply invested in preparing educators to create inclusive, strengths-based learning environments. I was also part of the team that designed and launched SPU’s Early Childhood Education major in 2021, helping shape a program responsive to today’s learners and schools.
My scholarship and consulting focus on twice-exceptionality and disability, with an emphasis on helping schools and families recognize strengths while supporting complex learning profiles. I also serve as Co-Principal Investigator for Classrooms that Cultivate Character, a university-wide initiative grounded in the belief that education is about both academic growth and the development of wise, compassionate, and courageous human beings.
Outside of my professional work, I’m a mother of three wonderful children and married to my husband Alex. These roles deeply inform my perspective and passion for whole-child and whole-family support. I also have a lifelong passion for soccer, which reflects my belief in the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of learning and growing together.
I hold a BS (2008) and MS (2010) from St. John’s University in K-12 education, with a specialization in Special Education, and a PhD (2017) from the University of London in Education with a focus on special education. I’m passionate about collaboration, encouragement, and creating spaces where students, families, and educators feel supported and brave. My favorite phrase, “Pay it forward,” reflects how I approach my work—supporting others in ways that ripple outward into classrooms, schools, and communities.
